Deena Pearlman (nee Slamowotz) (my grandmother) was born on October 4, 1930 in the town of Maidan which was then located in Czechoslovakia (today in Ukraine).
She lived with her parents and three siblings.
Sometime in late 1938, the mayor of the town knocked on Deens'a door in the middle of the night and advised the family to leave at once a because it was no longer safe for Jews to live in Maidan.
The family immediately left and boarded a train to Paris via Prague where they then headed north to London.
The family had booked voyage to the US on the Queen Mary.
The ship however was delayed for weeks and weeks and the family eventually decided to travel on another ship. As it turns out, this ship was the last one that departed the UK for America before the German Army shut down further departures.
Deena lost many family members and friends from school in the Holocaust.
